Hey all, do you have a some kind of knowlege, information etc. that you think will be valuable to others? If so one of the best things to do is build you a website and monetize the content. Now I know some of you are not web developer or designers but, don't worry I'm going to tell you some low cost and do-it-yourself ways to build you a content driven monetized website. At the end I'll list some useful websites for resources.
First off where do you begin well that can depend on your budget if you have the money to spend you can hire a professional developer such as myself, tell them what you want and then let them build the site for you. On the other hand if you don't have that kind of a budget then the best thing to do is follow my instructions:
1. Think of a domain name for your new website, make sure that the domain is either the name of your business or it relates in some what to it. Try to keep the domain name as short but make if more than 3 letters. For example if you're going to sell information about candles on your website don't use a domain like
www.joesstore.com instead you'd want to use something like
www.joeswaxworks.com or
www.joescandles.com. Also for business websites use .com extensions instead of .net, .tv, org etc. those are usually for specialty type domains. Try to make your domain name something that's easy to remember and that sticks in someones head.
2. Now that you've got that domain its now time to register it so that no one else can use that domain name but you. Now there are several domain registars out there but I personally use Godaddy (I am not an endorser), because it easy and painless to register a domain. Go to
http://www.godaddy.com when you get there on the home page you will see "Domain Search" all you have to do is put in your domain name you thought of and click go. This will tell you if the domain is available. If it is you have to create and account and pay $8.95 yr for that domain.
3. Ok now that you have a domain you need a website and a place to host your website. All a hosting provider does it give you a place to store your website files, pictures etc. so that your website can be seen by everyone who types in your domain name. Now you can get hosting for as little as 4.95 per month on up to hundreds per month it just depends on what you need. For this we'll go with simple hosting here's a provider that offers free hosting with good feature
http://www.bravenet.com. If you go there you can register and they'll send you a password to manage your hosting.
4. After you've found a hosting provider to host your website now its time to build one. Again I realize not everyone can build a website but don't worry there are resources out there. One way is to get a website template that already designed all you have to do is add your content and your are up and running. There are free template and some that cost, some of the free template are very simplistic designs and the ones that cost anywhere from $5.00 to $99.00. One site that I suggest is
www.templatemonster.com they have some low cost and not so low cost template. All of the templates are professionally done. Another good place is
www.freewebsitetemplates.com they have really nice looking template and the good thing about it is they are free to download.
5. After you've found a template you like you have to open the template and edit the content. Now this part may require an experienced person who knows html and/or how to use a graphics editor such as photoshop. If you know html then you can edit the template yourself or if you know someone see if they can edit it for you.
Finally once you have your template edited and done the way you like it has to be put on your hosting server so that it will be available on the web/Internet. In the next part of this discussion I'll tell you how to get your site up and running. Once its up and running we'll go in to how to get content and to monetize your site. If you have any questions you can call me for a 1 hour phone consultation.
